During the ninth practice of the New York Giants’ training camp, a notable play occurred involving cornerback Dru Phillips and wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson. During a team period, Phillips broke up a deep pass from quarterback Russell Wilson to Robinson. However, as the ball deflected into the air, Robinson, who was on his back, caught it on his chest and then ran for a touchdown.
Tom Coughlin attended two practices this week. He is known for saying, “luck is when preparation meets opportunity,” which seemed relevant to Robinson’s play.
Other highlights from the day included rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart connecting with third-year wide receiver Montrell Washington for another long touchdown during 1-on-1 drills. Russell Wilson also threw a touchdown pass to Malik Nabers in the end zone from a similar distance.
In 11-on-11 drills, aside from Robinson’s catch, Dart completed a touchdown pass to undrafted rookie Jordan Bly. Bly slid for the catch in the end zone and was ruled in by referees on the field.
The offense did not commit any turnovers during this session after four interceptions were recorded by the defense in Friday’s practice.
Additional plays included Phillips breaking up another pass during 1-on-1 drills and Wilson completing passes to tight ends Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger at the start of team drills. Bellinger’s reception resulted in significant yardage due to an effective play design.
Undrafted rookie Da’Quan Felton made a notable catch from Jameis Winston as part of three consecutive completions by Winston, including passes to Bly and Gunner Olszewski. Rookie outside linebacker Trace Ford recorded what would have been counted as a sack during practice.
The Giants’ remaining open practices are scheduled for August 4 and August 13 against the Jets in a joint session.
