WASHINGTON, D.C. — On July 14, 2023, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) voted against far-right, extreme legislation that would take away servicewomen’s right to access an abortion if they are stationed in states that do not protect a woman’s right to choose. Gottheimer released the following statement.
“The defense bill has consistently been bipartisan, but unfortunately, far-right extremists have hijacked the legislation as a tool to further attack choice, women’s health care, and personal privacy.
Our brave servicemembers risk their lives every day to protect our nation, and it sickens me that anyone would prevent them from making personal, private health care decisions about their own bodies, lives, and futures.
Nearly half of our servicewomen are stationed in states that do not protect a woman’s right to choose. The extreme provision forced into the defense bill by the right-wing would prevent them from accessing an abortion, even in cases of rape and the life of the mother.
I urge the Senate to work with House leadership to protect healthcare access for our servicewomen and their families, no matter where they are stationed. I look forward to voting for a defense bill that will help equip and prepare our service members to carry out their mission and defend our great country, boost national security, fight terror, and improve the lives of servicemembers in Jersey and across the country — without jeopardizing the health of our servicewomen.”
