Greater Bergen Community Action, Inc. - GBCA issued the following announcement.
Today we recognize the resilience of Black Americans in the face of injustice and inequity.
On this day in 1865, the Black people of Texas became the last to learn of their freedom from slavery in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation declared by President Abraham Lincoln two long years earlier in 1863.
Since that time, celebrations continue in honor of perseverance, strength and the invaluable contributions and achievements of the Black community — even through generations of oppression.
This Juneteenth, GBCA as the federally-designated anti-poverty agency of Bergen County, is reaffirming our commitment to seeking truth and taking action, as we continue to address persistent and emerging issues to effectively serve our community through work towards economic, and thus social, equity.
