The New York Giants resumed training camp with wide receiver Malik Nabers returning to practice after a recent shoulder injury. Head coach Brian Daboll addressed Nabers’ status before the session, stating, “We’ll put him out there and he’ll do what he can do which – he’ll be able to do stuff today. He’s OK.”
Nabers went on to deliver a standout moment during practice, catching a 50-yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson. The play drew significant reaction from those in attendance.
The team focused on generating more explosive plays, an area where the offense has sought improvement. Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson contributed with a long catch-and-run touchdown from Wilson. Daboll commented on the emphasis for big gains: “[That is] certainly a goal. We’re working at it. You can talk about it all you want, you got to go out there and do it.” He added, “You’re always trying to generate explosive plays, so again, you can generate them a variety of ways. We’re working on them every way we can to create some explosives because it’s a huge indicator of wins and losses, both on the offensive side and then preventing them on the defensive side.”
On defense, linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux nearly intercepted a pass near the line of scrimmage.
Other notable performances included Jalin Hyatt making several catches from Wilson along the sideline and Montrell Washington connecting with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart for multiple tough receptions during drills. Washington’s efforts were recognized by Daboll: “He made a couple of nice plays in that 1-on-1,” Daboll said. “Two good balls by Jaxson, two good catches by him. He’s learning the system, new to the system but he’s got some quickness and he’s done a nice job of what we’ve asked him to do.”
Defensive lineman Chauncey Golston was effective in disrupting offensive plays in the backfield while linebackers Micah McFadden and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles each recorded would-be sacks during red zone situations.
Quarterback Jameis Winston connected with Lil’Jordan Humphrey for another significant gain through the air, and safety Jevón Holland broke up a pass attempt.
The Giants have additional open practices scheduled for August 1-2 and August 4 as well as an upcoming joint practice with the Jets on August 13.
