The New Jersey GOP said on April 23 that the state received a $10.4 million federal grant under President Trump to help cover transportation costs for soccer fans attending FIFA World Cup matches, while questioning Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s focus on litigation against the president and complaints about FIFA funding.
The issue arises as New Jersey prepares to host eight FIFA World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium, with NJ Transit responsible for moving up to 40,000 fans per game in addition to regular commuters. The transit agency faces an estimated $48 million cost for these operations due to a host city agreement that eliminated parking at the venue and placed the full transportation burden on rail service. Reports indicate round-trip train fares from New York Penn Station could reach $150 during match days compared to normal rates around $13, according to NJ101.5.
In an April 23 post on its official X account, the New Jersey GOP addressed Gov. Sherrill’s recent complaints about FIFA transportation costs for World Cup fans heading to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and her focus on litigation against President Trump. The statement referenced prior federal support provided to the state for the event as part of broader preparations involving NJ Transit and host city agreements. The post appeared amid reports of planned fare increases and logistical challenges for the eight matches scheduled at the stadium, according to the New Jersey GOP’s official X account.
The Trump administration directed $100.3 million in federal transit funding nationwide to support World Cup preparations across host cities including $10.4 million specifically allocated to the New York-New Jersey region. FIFA stands to generate approximately $11 billion from the tournament while host cities and states manage significant infrastructure and security expenses. Comparable grants went to other locations such as $8.7 million for the Boston and Massachusetts area, according to Fox News.
The New Jersey GOP promotes principles of liberty and prosperity while working to restore what it calls “the American Dream” in the Garden State. It supports Republican candidates and advances policies focused on economic growth, public safety, and efficient government operations across New Jersey, according to its website.
