The New York Giants are set to begin their 2025 preseason with a game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, August 9, at 1 p.m. ET in Buffalo. The matchup will be broadcast locally on WNBC and nationally on NFL Network, with radio coverage available through WFAN 101.9FM.
Head coach Brian Daboll did not confirm how much playing time starters would receive but shared his approach to preseason participation: “I think it’s different for every team,” Daboll said about playing starters in the preseason. “I’ve done a lot of research in terms of teams in the last few years, coaches, veteran coaches, what they’ve done. I worked for some people that have had pretty good success in how we did it. I don’t think there’s one right formula. Play them, not play them. I think you need to do what’s best for your football team. So, is it a series? Is it two series? Is it a half? You talk about that as a staff as we get going.”
The all-time regular season record between the Giants and Bills stands at 8-6 in favor of Buffalo, who also won their most recent meeting 14–9 at Highmark Stadium during the 2023 season.
For this preseason opener, several Giants players will not participate due to injury status; offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and running back Eric Gray remain on the physically unable to perform list while outside linebacker Victor Dimukeje is still listed under non-football injury.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart is expected to see action for the first time in an NFL game setting after drawing attention during training camp practices. Dart expressed enthusiasm ahead of his debut: “I’m excited,” Dart told the media Thursday. “This is just the start of a dream of mine so I’m excited to take that next step, be out there, compete at the highest level. My family’s going to be there so I’m super excited to have them a part of this journey with me and yeah, I think that’s really it. I’m just stoked for the opportunity.” He added: “I’m just focused on being prepared,” said Dart. “Obviously, I’m going to go out there on the field and compete at my highest level and I’m going to play as hard as I can and I’m going to do good things and I’m going to make mistakes too and I understand that. I’m not going to be perfect when I step out there on that field but I think my mindset is just competing at the highest level, doing what I can to make this offense operate at the highest level and get these chances for the coaches to learn how I play the game, because obviously, we’re out at practice, we can’t get tackled, it’s a little different so it’ll be good to get these live-action reps and earn that trust.”
Bills head coach Sean McDermott stated quarterback Josh Allen would not play Saturday but noted Allen has been advising Dart since he was drafted by New York: “I talked to Josh a few days after I got drafted and he’s been somebody who I’ve really looked up to and since coming here, just watching a ton of his tape and how he was able to operate Coach Dabs system,” said Dart. “It’s going to be kind of a surreal feeling to be on the same field as him.” On Allen’s advice: “I think the biggest thing as the quarterback – he talked a lot about leadership,” Dart said. “That was kind of like his main thing and then trying to be the best teammate for the guys around you because as a quarterback, you have to raise the standards of everybody.”
The Giants’ initial unofficial depth chart includes Deonte Banks and Cor’Dale Flott both listed as starting outside cornerbacks opposite Paulson Adebo—a position they have been competing for since spring practices under defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s supervision: “I think they’re both doing a really good job…” defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said. “I like the growth of Tae. I think competition’s been good for both of them…He’s working…He’s competing for the job…just like everybody else is trying to earn their play time.” Bowen added regarding Flott: “From the spring to now, he was probably one of the guys that had the most pass breakups…”
In their previous meeting during Week 6 last season, Darius Slayton led Giants receivers with 69 yards while Wan’Dale Robinson caught eight passes; defensively Bobby Okereke tallied 11 tackles with two tackles for loss while Micah McFadden recorded seven tackles along with an interception and fumble recovery.
Wide receiver Montrell Washington has stood out during training camp according those following team developments closely; Washington brings experience from three years returning kicks and punts in addition his contributions during practice drills.
A key matchup Saturday will feature rookie linebacker Abdul Carter—New York’s No. 3 overall pick—facing Buffalo’s well-regarded offensive line unit early in training camp evaluations: “I’m excited for sure,” Carter said. “…That’s going to be fun…just playing in preseason…actually sack[ing]the quarterback…”
