Before the New York Giants began their first practice, General Manager Joe Schoen and Coach Brian Daboll addressed the media at their annual pre-camp press conference. They discussed a range of topics, including player injuries, quarterback strategy, and their professional relationship.
The Giants made several roster changes due to injuries before practice commenced. Left tackle Andrew Thomas was placed on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a foot injury sustained last season. Running back Eric Gray and outside linebacker Victor Dimukeje were also added to injury lists. Safety Anthony Johnson Jr. was waived due to a shoulder injury.
Schoen expressed optimism about Thomas’s recovery, stating that he “should be ready for the opener” against Washington on September 7. However, he cautioned that circumstances could change.
Wide receiver Malik Nabers has recovered from a toe issue and is ready for practice. Rookies Cam Skattebo and Darius Alexander are also fully participating in training.
Discussing quarterbacks, Schoen and Daboll shared confidence in the current lineup led by Russell Wilson. The backup quarterback position remains open as players compete during training camp. Rookie Jaxson Dart is learning from experienced teammates like Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito.
Schoen highlighted Dart’s potential but noted that determining his readiness would rely on input from Daboll and the coaching staff. He emphasized the benefits of allowing rookie quarterbacks time to learn before taking on significant roles.
As the team prepares for preseason games, Schoen mentioned that they hold a favorable position in the waiver wire claiming order, which could influence roster decisions with many players expected to be released league-wide around Labor Day Weekend.
Regarding their partnership, both Schoen and Daboll spoke about their evolving relationship over time. They emphasized mutual respect and open communication as key factors in managing team operations effectively.
Daboll commented on handling challenges: “There’s things you learn every year… You make mistakes, you communicate… I think it helps when players do things outside the building.”
Schoen added: “Those hard, honest conversations… help this thing work.”
The duo acknowledged that difficult times have strengthened their collaboration: “That’s when you’re able to have those honest conversations,” said Daboll.
