Giants.com is engaging fans with a countdown to the 2025 Giants Training Camp, presenting 25 questions over 25 days. One of the focal points is identifying potential team captains for the upcoming season.
Dan Salomone from Giants.com notes that historically, the number of captains has varied. Between 2009 and 2017, there were three season-long captains on seven occasions. This number increased to five in both 2013 and 2014 before returning to three until 2017. From 2018 to 2021, six captains were chosen each year.
Under head coach Brian Daboll’s leadership, the Giants had ten captains in his first two seasons. Last year saw five: quarterback Daniel Jones (sixth time), left tackle Andrew Thomas (third), defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (third), linebacker Bobby Okereke (second), and long snapper Casey Kreiter (second non-consecutive).
This year’s captain selection remains undecided, but Thomas, Lawrence, Okereke, and Kreiter are likely candidates for another term. If there’s one vacancy, Russell Wilson emerges as a strong contender based on his impressive track record and teammate endorsements.
Wilson has been a captain for twelve consecutive seasons across different teams except during his rookie year in 2012. His lone season in Pittsburgh also saw him being voted as a captain.
If more than five captains are selected this year, Darius Slayton could be considered due to his contributions and previous nomination as the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2024.
Other potential candidates include Malik Nabers who set franchise records as a rookie; kicker Graham Gano; outside linebacker Brian Burns; offensive lineman Greg Van Roten; Micah McFadden; safety Dane Belton; and veterans Paulson Adebo and Jevón Holland.
Players will cast their votes after the announcement of the final roster in late August.
The series also covers various other topics such as offseason evaluations, standout performances at spring practices, insights into new players like OLB Abdul Carter and QB Jaxson Dart, coaching staff changes, player development plans, competition outlooks for training camp, injury status updates, schedule assessments among others.
