After veterans reported for training camp on Tuesday, the New York Giants began their practice sessions at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. This marks the first practice since minicamp in mid-June, with just 17 days remaining until the preseason opener and 46 days until the regular season starts on September 7 at Washington.
“Everything is new each year,” said coach Brian Daboll alongside general manager Joe Schoen during their pre-camp press conference. “We like the guys we’ve brought in, the additions, we like the draft picks that we’ve had, how they’ve worked. I like how we competed in the spring, so I’m looking forward to training camp.”
The Giants focused on red zone drills during their first day of practice. Quarterback Russell Wilson connected with wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown on the very first play of 7-on-7 drills. Wilson also threw touchdowns to Malik Nabers, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Theo Johnson.
“It was a great first day,” Wilson commented. “I thought we did a really good job. Obviously Wan’Dale in the first play, scoring a sweet touchdown.”
Rookie running back Cam Skattebo caught a touchdown from Jaxson Dart during the initial 7-on-7 period and later scored again on a pass from Jameis Winston.
Cornerback Nic Jones made an impact with a pick-six during 11-on-11 drills. The Giants’ defense also saw contributions from cornerbacks Paulson Adebo and Deonte Banks who broke up passes and prevented touchdowns.
Other notable plays included tight end Thomas Fidone II catching Dart’s first pass attempt and Greg Dulcich displaying strong hands in traffic on a pass from Winston.
Outside linebackers Trace Ford and Tomon Fox recorded would-be sacks while safety Dane Belton lined up what would have been a significant hit at the goal line to prevent a touchdown.
The Giants have several open practices scheduled through August 13, including one joint session with the Jets.
