The New York Giants commenced their training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Wednesday. The practice, which was lighter than usual as pads are not yet in use, focused primarily on red zone work.
General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll addressed the media before practice, while defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, quarterback Russell Wilson, and wide receiver Malik Nabers spoke afterward.
Lawrence emphasized the need for the defense to prove itself despite high expectations following the selection of Abdul Carter with the third overall pick. “It’s exciting, it’s new challenges,” Lawrence stated. He stressed the importance of daily improvement and winning on first and second downs.
Despite recent struggles after a playoff run in 2022, Lawrence expressed urgency for success this season. “It is a very important thing to me and that’s my challenge,” he said about helping the team win.
Regarding player availability, left tackle Andrew Thomas and running back Eric Gray were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Schoen indicated optimism about Thomas’s readiness for Week 1. Meanwhile, Lawrence and Nabers participated in drills after limited offseason activity due to injuries.
The quarterback room has undergone significant changes with veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston joining rookie Jaxson Dart. Daboll affirmed Wilson as QB1: “These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter.”
Wilson had a strong showing during practice, connecting with various receivers including Wan’Dale Robinson and Tyrone Tracy Jr., along with multiple touchdowns to Nabers. Reflecting on his performance, Wilson said: “It was a great first day… there’s always things that we could always get better at.”
Nabers praised Wilson’s leadership: “To have that on side of me in my locker room is just an extra mentor.”
