Training camp for the New York Giants continued on Tuesday with the team completing its second padded practice of the summer. The offensive unit again focused on the run game, leading to fewer big plays downfield.

Head coach Brian Daboll addressed reporters before practice, while offensive tackle Evan Neal, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., and cornerback Deonte Banks spoke after the session.

A key topic at camp has been Evan Neal’s move from right tackle to an interior position on the offensive line. Coach Daboll commented on Neal’s adjustment, stating, “I think Evan steadily improved playing inside. Things happen a little quicker in there. He’s a big man so he’s done a nice job on his double teams and getting movement and it was good to see him out there in one-on-ones at the guard spot. (We) look for him to continue to improve…”

Daboll further explained that playing inside requires different communication and skill sets compared to tackle: “Things change a little bit from the outside to the inside, the communication piece – things happen, like I said, a little bit quicker. Not always on an island. Most of the time you’re on an island at tackle. Again, offensive-line play is offensive-line but different skill sets (are) required for each spot. He’s had some experience with it in college but he’s taking it head on and doing everything he can do to improve each day.”

Tyrone Tracy Jr., who has been running behind Neal during practices, shared his perspective: “He’s moving stuff back there, man,” Tracy said. “When I say he’s actively trying to get better. Obviously, he had injuries and stuff that came up, but obviously he’s doing everything he can to get back into it. But E-Neal is doing the best he can, with the opportunities he’s given.”

Neal played exclusively at right tackle over his first three NFL seasons but started 13 games at left guard during his college career at Alabama in 2019.

Evan Neal expressed appreciation for being able to contribute wherever needed: “I’m just focused on getting better each year and being the player I know I can be,” he said. “I appreciate the Giants organization for continuing to believe in me and giving me an opportunity to showcase my skillset. I’m focusing on getting better every single day, chopping wood and carrying the water.”

The rookie class also drew attention during training camp’s early days. Defensive lineman Darius Alexander has begun showing potential through strong performances in one-on-one drills as padded practices continue.

Coach Daboll described Alexander’s attributes: “He is a lot like these other guys,” said Daboll. “There’s some flashes out there. He’s got length and athleticism and he’s rushed from different areas in the pass-rush portion of things. He’s rushed inside, we’ve put him on the edge outside. (He’s a) big body guy who’s got sneaky athleticism for a big man…he’s got quick feet, he’s got long arms, he’s got good get off, he’s got a natural ability to rush…”

In addition to changes along both lines of scrimmage, depth at running back remains important for New York this season.

Tracy praised fellow running back Cam Skattebo’s addition: “Cam here is nothing but adding to what we got,” Tracy said. “I think that it’s a great addition to the room…We didn’t add Cam just to do one thing…They added me because I’m a good running back.” He went on: “…there is no third down back…It’s more so can you play…and make the most of it.”

Tracy also noted Skattebo’s physical style complements his own approach: “The man’s strong and powerful,” Tracy stated about Skattebo’s playing style compared with his own elusiveness.

Both players bring versatility as runners and receivers out of the backfield as well as contributors in pass protection.
