Brian Daboll, head coach of the New York Giants, expressed his respect for former Giants coach Tom Coughlin after Coughlin visited a recent training camp session. Since Daboll took over as head coach in early 2022, several Giants alumni have attended practices to speak with the team.
Coughlin, who led the Giants from 2004 to 2015 and secured two Super Bowl victories, addressed players at the end of a training camp practice last week. He spoke about the significance of summer practices in preparing for the upcoming season.
Daboll discussed Coughlin’s influence during an appearance on NFL Network with Mike Garafolo and Judy Battista. He said, “I have a lot of appreciation for Coach Coughlin. He’s someone that I talk to often, lean on, get advice from. We had him out at practice, he was here again yesterday. He’s just a good resource. He’s done this for a long time. He comes from a great coaching tree, he’s been very successful as a head coach with this organization. He knows what it takes.
“Again, it’s good to get a set of eyes here of someone that’s done it for a long time and lean on a little bit. But a great appreciation and respect for Coach Coughlin. I think our players feel the same way with him and a lot of the older guys that have come back and talked to them about what it means to be a New York Giant.”
Coughlin’s tenure with the Giants included 102 regular-season wins—second only to Steve Owen’s 151—and eight postseason victories, tying Bill Parcells for most playoff wins by any Giants coach. His leadership resulted in two Super Bowl titles against the New England Patriots (Super Bowls XLII and XLVI), three NFC East championships, and five playoff appearances.
Before becoming head coach, Coughlin served as wide receivers coach for the team from 1988 to 1990 and was part of the staff during their Super Bowl XXV win.
